Group calls for stronger policies to encourage value-addition to cocoa produced in Ghana, Cote D'Ivoire – Ghana Visions

A policy and advocacy think tank, Tsa-Ke-Mo is calling for stronger public policies to encourage value-addition to cocoa produced in Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire.
The group which is geared at promoting value addition and youth job creation from natural and agricultural resources said it is rather disappointing that Africa which produces 75% of the world’s cocoa only enjoys 2% of the world’s $100billion chocolate industry.
According to them, though there have been some indications by governments to address the huge disparity identified, not much has been realized due to a lack of strong policies and commitments.
An implementation of these policies they say will generate jobs and employment for Africa’s energetic youth population. ....

President to join national campaign on cocoa consumption

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today join the national campaign for increased consumption of cocoa products.
The President is expected to release a pre-recorded video in which he is featured sharing his involvement with chocolate and other cocoa products and his appeal to the public to consume cocoa products for health and vitality.
The Public Affairs Manager of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), Mr Fiifi Boafo, said President Akufo-Addo’s message is part of special campaign messages from the country’s top leaders encouraging the public to consume more cocoa-sourced products. ....

Ghana is the second largest producer of cocoa in the world but cannot be found in the league of 50 top cocoa consuming countries.
The country consumes about 0.53 kilograms (KG) of cocoa-sourced products every year and that is a drop in the ocean when compared to countries such as Switzerland, Australia, Germany, Ireland and Great Britain where an average of eight KG of the products are consumed every year.
When it comes to the golden pod, the country produces what it hardly eats and that is a blow, given the nutritional and health benefits of cocoa. ....
