MANILA Agricultural groups and food stakeholders said they will not attend the Department of Agriculture’s National Food Security Summit on May 18-19 to condemn the agency’s “utter disregard of our [food producers] voices amid repeated engagements and its continued patronage of foreign big business and local monopolies.” ....

Groups oppose hiked volume and lower tariff for imported pork

Several agriculture lobby groups jointly appealed for President Rodrigo Duterte to withdraw his recommendation to increase the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) for pork by 350,000 metric tons (MT) as this may cause further damage to the local hog industry.
The groups also asked Duterte to shelve another proposal of the Department of Agriculture (DA) which is to bring down the tariff on pork imports.

“ASF has caused serious harm, Mr. President, but the proposals of the DA are fatal blows that could slowly kill the hog industry
. Double dead po ang sektor namin pagnatuloy ang mga proposals na ito, Mr. President [our sector will end up double dead if DA’s proposals are approved,” groups said. ....

Pork industry warns of lost pricing leverage if imports expand

HOG RAISERS said plans to expand pork imports may actually result in higher pork prices if supplier countries gain leverage on pricing when the Philippines signals a high degree of dependence on foreign produce.
“We could be giving the wrong signal. From 54,000 (MT), naging 400,000 (MT) kailangan natin… (we indicated demand of over 400,000 MT). We will not be surprised if pork import prices rise from $1.50 per kilo to $2.00-$2.50,” according to the National Federation of Hog Farmers, Inc. President Chester Warren Y. Tan, who was speaking at a joint hearing Thursday of the House Committee on Agriculture and Food and the House Committee on Trade and Industry Thursday. ....

Senate agri panel seeks declaration of nationwide state of emergency amid ASF problem

The Senate agriculture committee is calling on the Department of Agriculture (DA) to recommend to President Rodrigo Duterte the declaration of a state of emergency in the entire country amid the threat of the African swine fever (ASF).
During its meeting on Tuesday, the panel approved the motion of Senator Francis Pangilinan calling for a declaration of state of emergency in the island of Luzon in light of the ASF threat.
We move that [the] DA recommend to the Office of the President the declaration of a state of emergency in Luzon so that public funds may be realigned to address the state of emergency, he said. ....
