As a sociocultural and material force, tourism is so large as to be incomprehensible. The difficulty of understanding it in full requires us to break it down into parts, an exercise not unlike the act of travel itself: We can’t fully take in the places we visit, so we instead form impressions from bits and pieces.
These intangible souvenirs are fallible and prone to fade, though; when someone asks to see them, there’s nothing to show. Photography provides a solution, enabling us to shore up memory and capture passing moments. While the act of taking a picture has long been second nature for many of us, examining its origins provides an interesting link to our current moment. Although we can trace our archival imperative to the early days of leisure travel, armed conflict and a global pandemic truly solidified photography’s place in mass culture. A virtual exhibition to mark the 150th anniversary of Scottish colourist Samuel Peploe’s birth has been launched in Fife – with thanks due to a famous local linen magnate.
ONFife, Fife’s Cultural Trust, say Peploe’s pieces – with their vibrant paintwork and luminous settings – provide the perfect pick-me-up for the dark days of winter and these travel-restricted times.
With 46 of the artist’s paintings, Kirkcaldy Art Gallery currently has the biggest group of Peploes outside National Galleries Scotland, thanks principally to the superb collection of Kirkcaldy linen manufacturer J W Blyth, the maternal grandfather of journalist and broadcaster Michael Portillo. ....

Museums and leading artists are inviting the British public to take part in what they hope will be the biggest art exhibition ever mounted.
The Great Big Art Exhibition is being launched by Sir Antony Gormley, who is asking people to make an artwork at home and put in their window or garden.
The Angel of the North sculptor said the ambition was to create a country-wide show of imagination and optimism, inspired by the rainbow images people made to celebrate the NHS and keyworkers during the first lockdown. ....
