National Unity Minister Halimah Mohamed Sadique tests positive for Covid-19


PUTRAJAYA: National Unity Minister Datuk Halimah Mohamed Sadique has tested positive for Covid-19.
A statement from the ministry said that Halimah underwent a screen test on Jan 18 and the Health Ministry on Tuesday (Jan 19) confirmed that she is positive.
Datuk Halimah will now undergo treatment and quarantine as instructed. Her condition will be monitored by health authorities in Johor Baru.
While undergoing quarantine, the minister will continue to monitor the National Unity Ministry s affairs to ensure all activities go smoothly.
Datuk Halimah expresses her heartfelt thanks to those who offer their well wishes and prayers and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused due to this development, said the ministry on Tuesday. ....

HATE speech in Malaysia tends to evolve around race and religion. Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been some that were directed at foreign workers/illegal migrants. Some started with pointing fingers at the initial outbreak, blaming it on tourists’ from China. 
It is time we have laws against hate speech in this country. One of the biggest concerns we have on “more laws controlling speech” is the fact that they would be abused or seem to be oppressive or unfair.
Currently, Article 10 of the Federal Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but there are a few Acts that regulate this freedom. These include the Sedition Act 1948, Official Secrets Act 1972, Printing Presses and Publication Act 1984, Internal Security Act 1960, Penal Code, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA). ....

About 24,000 victims of various atrocities during the 30 years of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) dictatorship of founding President Kamuzu Banda have given the President Lazarus Chakwera a one month ultimatum to compensate them for various atrocities they went through during the MCP era.
Addressing journalists in Lilongwe on their grievances, the victims, being led by Sangwani Mkandawire, who chairs the Ex-detainees and Returnees Association says ‘enough is enough now’; claiming the government is playing double standards and deliberately delaying to help. ....
