President Kiir appoints Upper Nile State governor and his deputy
South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday night appointed the governor and deputy governor of Upper Nile State, ending a six-month stalemate between Kiir s government and SPLM-IO over the nominee for the gubernatorial post.
In presidential decrees read on state-run television SSBC, President Kiir appointed Budhok Ayang Kur and James Tor Monybuny as Upper Nile state governor and deputy governor respectively.
Mid last year, Kiir appointed governors for nine states except for Upper Nile. In late December 2020 and early January 2021, the president appointed deputy governors for those nine states. SPLM-IO had nominated Gen. Jonson Olony as their gubernatorial candidate for Upper Nile state. ....

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army in Opposition (SPLM-IO) in the former state of Fashoda also known as the Agwelek forces last weekend rejected a move allegedly by the movement s leader Dr. Riek Machar to replace Gen. Johnson Olony as his candidate for the position of governor of Upper Nile State.
Last November, the SPLM-IO relaxed its stance against the formation of states governments and the legislative assemblies without the appointment of Gen. Olony as the governor of Upper Nile State after President Salva Kiir refused to appoint Gen. Olony, referring to him as a warmonger. ....

Wani Michael,30, the executive director of the Okay Africa Foundation (OAF), who also doubles as a South Sudanese civil society activist was recognized and awarded as one of the top 60 emerging young African leaders from 20 African countries for his role in advocating for youth inclusion and participation in governance.
He was awarded at an event organized by the Africa Focus Awards 2020 in Lagos-Nigeria last weekend.
Wani’s life has however not been rosy and he grew up grappling with the challenges of being a refugee, forced from the then Sudan to refugee life in Uganda at a tender age. ....
