President Muhammadu Buhari By Johnbosco Agbakwuru – Abuja President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday, said that the success of would determine the success of the ongoing linking of SIMs to National Identification Numbers, NIN, would determine the success of the ongoing war against insecurity.
President Buhari stated this at the launch of the National Policy for the Promotion of Indigenous Content in Nigerian Telecoms Sector and Revised National Identity Policy for SIM Cards registration, held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The President in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Femi Adesina, said proper identification of all Nigerians and legal residents in the country and the ability to conveniently access a database will provide the impetus for more effective planning and security oversight. ....

Nigerian government extends NIN registration again – new deadline is June 30

The Federal Government of Nigeria has extended the May 9 deadline for Nigerian mobile subscribers to link their National Identity Numbers (NINs) to their SIM cards. This announcement marks the fourth time the government has adjusted the NIN registration deadline since the first call on December 30, 2020. 
The country’s Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami and other industry stakeholders held a virtual meeting and concluded that an additional 8-week extension will give Nigerians more time to get their NIN and complete supplementary data verification processes. 
Since the first call for registration, a significant amount of progress has been made. An estimated 54 million Nigerians have obtained their NINs. When you do the math, 54 million registrants translate to about 190 million mobile numbers with linked NINs. This is deduced from the empirical data that suggest that each unique NIN maps three to four p ....

MTN revenue rises to N385.2bn - Punch Newspapers

MTN Nigeria has reported revenue growth of 17.2 per cent to N385.2bn in the first quarter ended March 31, compared with N329.2bn in the same period of 2020.
According to the unaudited first-quarter report of the company, the revenue growth was supported by an increase of 42.6 per cent and eight per cent in data and voice revenue respectively.
Mobile subscribers, however, declined by five million to 71.5 million which the company attributed to the effects of customer churn and the regulatory restrictions on new SIM sales and activations.
Active data users also declined marginally by 71,000 to 32.5 million, though there was an 86.7 per cent increase in data traffic and a 48.5 per cent increase in usage (MB per user) from the existing base. ....
