A Future With Hope, Free From Bonded Labour

Monday, 17 May 2021, 5:15 am
By Padma Kumari Tamata
Formerly in bonded
labour, Padma Kumari Tamata is now a farmer, and grows and
sells her own vegetables in the Kanchanpur district of
Nepal.
My name is Padma and I come from
Vashi, a small hamlet in Nepal’s far-west Kanchanpur
district. All my family was working on a farm as bonded
labourers. People call us
Haliyas
.
We
were working for the landlord to pay off our debt. This debt
came from my parents or maybe my grandparents, I don’t
know. But it has never been paid so we continued to work ....

It was noted by the ILO in late February that the data was abundantly clear that the COVID-19 pandemic had had a disproportionately negative impact on women. It was further noted that, “because more women work in the tourism, retail, and informal sectors, which have been hardest hit by the pandemic, their livelihoods have been upended. Understanding the extent of this impact is the first step in reversing course. Yet the pandemic has also exposed and exacerbated data gaps that undermine our ability to act intentionally and craft effective policy responses.”

37th Universal Periodic Review: UK closing statement

3 February 2021 (Transcript of the speech, exactly as it was delivered)
The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a ‘peer review’ process that reviews the human rights record of every UN member state once every 4 years. It is a unique tool of the Human Rights Council, aimed at sharing best practice. As a strong supporter of the UPR process, we have participated and raised priority human rights concerns in all reviews since the process began in 2006. This session reviewed 14 states: Australia, Austria, Georgia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Micronesia, Myanmar, Nauru, Nepal, Oman, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, St Kitts and Nevis and St Lucia. ....
