BALIK PULAU: Working from a temporary stall in Teluk Kumbar here, Salmi Salleh has been busy preparing the regular festive bestseller – lemang – since the beginning of Ramadan.
As Hari Raya Aidilfitri draws closer, the 42-year-old and his family have been racing against time to meet the demand for the traditional glutinous rice delight.
On weekdays, they can make over 150 bamboo cylinders daily, each filled to the brim and cooked over a fire.
On weekends, the amount of lemang produced will be doubled, and smoke can be seen spiralling upwards from the roadside here even from afar. ....

GEORGE TOWN: Penang’s durian season will be late this year but better quality fruits are expected when they start falling in May.
Tan Chee Keat, who owns orchards in Balik Pulau, Teluk Bahang and Teluk Kumbar, predicted that the durian season would run from May to August.
“The yield this year may come later but the fruit quality is expected to be a lot better than last year.
“This is because there was intermittent rain nearly every month last year but since December, we have seen very little rainfall. ....

Police cripple trafficking syndicate in Penang, seize drugs worth over RM40,000

BALIK PULAU: A drug trafficking syndicate operating from budget hotels in Bayan Lepas has been crippled after the police arrested nine people and seized drugs worth more than RM40,000.
Balik Pulau OCPD Supt A. Anbalagan said the suspects are aged from 17 to 39 years old and were nabbed during series of raids conducted between 11am to 6.30pm on Tuesday (Jan 5).
Supt Anbalagan said in the first raid, a team of police from the district Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID) raided a room at a budget hotel here and found drugs believed to be syabu and heroin.
When police barged into the room, four suspects were found and drugs believed to be syabu and heroin were found in packets, he said during a press conference at the district police headquarters on Friday (Jan 8). ....
