When he first launched Upsie in 2015, Clarence Bethea initially had a hard time selling investors on his startup that aimed to reinvent the product warranty business.
Not anymore. St. Paul-based Upsie announced Thursday that it has raised $18.2 million in a Series A round of funding.

Warranty Platform Upsie Raises $18.2M
Founder Clarence Bethea hopes his success will encourage other Black entrepreneurs. He plans to double the St. Paul startup s staff.
St. Paul-based online warranty platform Upsie just finalized an $18.2 million Series A round that founder Clarence Bethea hopes will encourage other Black founders.
“Getting more dollars to Black and Brown founders is always top of mind in conversations there’s still such a deficit,” Bethea said. “Today represents that it’s possible.”
“Clarence and his team have created an incredible and joyful experience for customers purchasing consumer warranties, which is no small feat given where the industry has been,” True Ventures partner Puneet Agarwal said in a statement. “We love the unique impact they are making and the passion the entire Upsie team has around putting consumers first.” ....

Upsie, a St. Paul, Minn.-based consumer-centric platform for purchasing product warranties, raised $18.2m in Series A funding.
The round was led by True Ventures with participation from Concrete Rose VC, Avanta Ventures (CSAA Insurance Group, a AAA insurer), Kapor Capital, Samsung Next, Massive, Backstage Capital, Awesome People Ventures, Draft Ventures, Matchstick Ventures, M25, Silicon Valley Bank, Bread & Butter Ventures, Ordinary Ventures, Diverse Angels, Imagination Capital, Uncommon VC, Marc Belton, Daren Cotter (Founder and CEO of InboxDollars), George Azih (Founder and CEO of LeaseQuery), Richard Parsons, Anton Vincent, Sri Pangulur, Damon DiVito, Jon and Lottie Rezneck, etc.
The company will use the funds to hire, increase customer awareness and continue building its warranty product offerings and verticals. ....
