Since the federal government relinquished control of the former Coast Guard base in 2003, the island has been floated as the site of a casino, an amusement park, a convention center, and a supermax prison.
While those development dreams have languished, more and more New Yorkers have taken advantage of the unique urban retreat. Under the stewardship of the Trust for Governors Island, the spruced up park has offered essential cultural programming and more frequent ferries, along with 172 acres of minimally tamed wandering space all of it located less than half a mile from the tip of Manhattan. ....

Sheep Family 'Hired' to Clear Invasive Plants at Governors Island – NBC New York

Sheep are best tasked for the project - rather than goats or other animals - because they enjoy herbaceous plants, such as grasses, phragmites and mugwort, and will munch through those without eating the young trees.
This innovative, environmentally friendly landscaping program will protect our Island’s plant life from invasive species while allowing our horticulture team to spend their time on more productive pursuits than weeding Hammock Grove, said Clare Newman, President and CEO of the Trust for Governors Island.

NEW YORK CITY Sheep don t think the invasive plant species sprouting up on Governors Island are so baaaad.
In fact, they find them delicious.
Governors Island s caretakers are counting on a flock of five wooly foragers to take a major bite out of invasive plants on the island s Hammock Grove. For four to five months this summer, they ll turn the grove into a literal Sheep s Meadow.
