“Oh, that’s a problem,” Umberger replied as he kept his cellphone focused on Johnson. In the back seat, DeLand Police Capt. Prurince Dice, playing the part of a recalcitrant passenger, wasn’t having any of it. Dice accused Johnson of fabricating the stop. “He lying. He lying. I want to see the radar,” Dice said. “Officer” Johnson turned his attention to Dice and broke from standard procedure for a traffic stop. “Who is your barber?” Johnson asked Dice, and he didn’t mean it as a compliment. That caused Dice and the room of about 18 students to fill with laughter. ....
Louise Chapman has been heading up the Volusia County School District’s adjunct science classroom long enough to know that sometimes, students need to see things to understand them. She’s met students who think that Spruce Creek eventually feeds into the Pacific Ocean. Students who have never been fishing. Students who think the plankton they’re looking at under the microscope will look like the cartoon villain of the same name from SpongeBob SquarePants. He said it feels unbelievable to be awarded the top honor for Volusia teachers. He was selected from 71 nominees from each of the district s schools. In his application for the award, he wrote that he became a teacher at age 30 and uses his position to build confidence and trust, foster creativity and give children a voice. For the last several years, I ve had the pleasure of seeing Mr. G and his students in action and I can honestly say that he is one of the most talented teachers I have seen in our profession. ....
Brooklyn Freer has never been much of a talker. Her mom had to pry just to hear about her day, she hated to talk about her feelings, and she didn’t like school that much. So when she had to transfer from a private school to Pine Trail Elementary in Ormond Beach for the third grade, her mom was worried. Thanks to Brooklyn’s teacher Jenny Haney, she soon realized she didn’t need to be. “She’s so different now,” said her mom, Alexis Freer. “She’s saying stuff that I can’t believe is coming from her. She’s grown up so much just from the short time she’s been with (Mrs. Haney).” ....
High schools in the two districts continue to report the most cases per site. This week, Flagler Palm Coast High reported an additional 10 cases, bringing its total to 41. In Volusia County, DeLand High has the highest number of cases with 31. Differing numbers reported by the different entities have been a problem all year. According to an FAQ on the state s coronavirus update web page, the inconsistencies should be taken up with the district and not the state. The numbers presented by the state are collected by county health departments and through state epidemiological investigations. The districts usually report more cases, but the state s report includes a breakdown of how many cases are in each school information the districts have been unwilling to provide. Neither agency is providing information about how many students or staff members are in quarantine. However, last week nearby St. Johns County reported that almost 1,500 students were in quarantine after be ....
