It was on a recent fishing trip to South Holston River and Lake when I was viscerally reminded of Tennessee Valley Authorityâs many contributions to our stateâs wildlife and natural resources.
TVA is of course primarily known for being the power producer that electrified this region of the U.S. all those decades ago. But the law that established the TVA set its mission wider â as a force for the management and cultivation of the valleyâs many and diverse resources.
Theyâre doing far more than keeping the lights on.
Iâve been CEO of the Tennessee Wildlife Federation for the past 19 of the organizationâs 75 years. In that time, the organization has worked with the TVA on countless conservation issues. Every day, Tennesseans get to enjoy the significant benefits of their decades-long conservation work, though we might not always know where to look. ....

Electrofishing: Stunning way to study life under water

BRISTOL â Dave Matthews says in order to keep fish and their habitats healthy, you have to continually monitor their populations.
Matthews, an aquatic zoologist with the Tennessee Valley Authority, proudly says he and his cohorts have a pretty good idea of whatâs going on.
âWe truly feel like we have our finger on the pulse of the valley, especially on the rivers, the arteries,â Matthews says.
Matthews and his team were at the tailwaters of the South Holston River on Tuesday, demonstrating electrofishing. The crew uses a battery-powered backpack shocker that puts a small amount of electricity into the water and stuns the fish. They then flow into the waiting net to be inspected and catalogued. ....

BRISTOL â The South Holston Riverâs tailwaters are known around the country for trout fishing.
Keeping that reputation takes a lot of work and the Tennessee Valley Authority, which manages the reservoir system of which the South Holston is part, takes it seriously.
The TVA put on an event Tuesday at the weir dam below South Holston Dam, bringing together several agencies and organizations with the same goal â preserving and promoting areas like the South Holston.
âStewardship is one of TVAâs main missions,â said Dennis Baxter, an aquatic zoologist who manages river and reservoir compliance for TVA. âBasically to preserve an area like this and enhance it so we can have a fabulous trout fishery out here. ....
