Holyoke seeks input on Springdale Park master plan; playground is ‘out of code, not fun and showing its age’ Updated 1:09 PM; The department held a listening session Thursday at the park, and launched an online survey. Built around 1895, Springdale remains Holyoke’s largest park, with several baseball fields, two spray pads, and a vast expanse of green space. Parks Department Director Terry Sheppard said Springdale is showing wear and tear, especially around the faded, outdated playground area. The master plan project began two years ago. Sheppard said the initial plan was to bolster safety and limit vehicle access to the park. With limited parking spaces, some visitors drive their cars over the curb on Main Street and park on the grass. “It hasn’t been safe on busy weekend days,” she said. “No one is here to say, ‘get off the field.’” ....

The Holyoke Water Works project is intended to address water pressure problems in old pipes where tuberculation the buildup of mounds of rust shrinks the diameter of the pipe. That can be a problem for firefighters a fact highlighted in the fall of 2019, when the Holyoke Fire Department had difficulties drawing water to battle a disastrous house fire on Fairfield Avenue. ....
Water main replacement project set in Holyoke’s Highlands; should enhance firefighting capabilities Updated May 04, 2021; HOLYOKE – Residents in the Highlands can expect delays and detours in the coming months as a water main replacement project gets underway. The Holyoke Water Works will replace aging pipes on Fairfield Avenue, Morgan, Pearl and Nonotuck Streets. Portions of Loomis Avenue and Pleasant, and Northampton Streets are affected by the project. A Holyoke Gas and Electric crew will spend the next four weeks updating gas lines on Pearl and Morgan Streets. Homeowners can expect alerts from the Water Works and Gas and Electric as the project proceeds. ....

Holyoke’s Joshua Garcia, a graduate of the city’s public schools and the current town administrator in Blandford, announced Thursday that he will add his name to the list of candidates seeking to occupy room 1 in City Hall. Garcia, 35, has a master’s degree in public administration from Westfield State University and has served as Blandford’s town administrator since 2018. Prior to that, he worked as a municipal services manager with the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission and as a property manager with the Holyoke Housing Authority. He previously served as a member of the Holyoke School Committee. ....
