WOODBURY, MN A senior from Woodbury High School was selected to be a United States Presidential Scholar, South Washington County Schools said.
Esperanza Lee has also received other honors including being named as a President s Volunteer Service Gold Award recipient, U.S. Department of State Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellow, World Food Prize Foundation Borlaug Scholar, Minnesota Governor s Commendation for leadership and Bank of America Student Leader, the district said.
The United States Presidential Scholars Program began in 1964 and recognizes the nation s most distinguished seniors, the district said. ....

How is the winner decided?
The entire process started with 75 candidates for the title. The number of candidates went from 75 to 9 through a few different steps but ultimately was done by an independent group of 24 people that are leaders in education, business, government, and nonprofits. Later in June, individual interviews will take place with all nine of the finalists, and then votes will be cast to determine the winner. You can learn more about the selection process here. ....

Then a colleague fell ill last year with an aggressive brain cancer. It was the seventh cancer diagnosis among staff at Park High School in Cottage Grove in six years, Diediker said nearly all in people under age 50. Before long, she and some colleagues had drawn up a list of nearly 30 current and former Park High staff who contracted various cancers since 1990, some of them twice. Two one of whom since died from the cancer shared the same classroom. ....
