Pierce Transit considers eliminating hundreds of bus stops in hopes of faster service

Pierce Transit is considering the elimination of 407 bus stops nearly 20% across Pierce County in an effort to make bus travel more efficient. First, it wants to hear from riders.
The transit agency pitched the plan, called Bus Stop Balancing, to the Tacoma City Council on Tuesday. Some 212 of the proposed retired stops would be within the city’s boundaries. The agency currently serves 2,114 stops.
The goal is to speed up bus service and produce cost savings that could lead to more service, said Pierce Transit spokeswoman Rebecca Japhet. ....

Feb. 16 A third teenager has been charged in the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy as he drove away from an attempted robbery in Tacoma.
Pierce County prosecutors on Tuesday charged Masai McClarron, 16, with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, three counts of first-degree assault and second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm for a Jan. 29 shooting that killed 16-year-old Shane Kolowitz.
Also charged in the homicide is a 13-year-old boy and his brother Christopher Slipko, 16. ....

Crews battle early morning house fire in Tacoma

TACOMA, Wash. - Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire that gutted a home in Tacoma early Monday morning. Crews responded to the scene, in the area of South 92nd Street and South Yakima Avenue at about 3 a. m. after receiving reports of a heavily involved fire. Smoke and flames were billowing from the home when the first firefighters arrived on scene. Crews brought the fire under control, checked the house for any occupants. ....

TACOMA, Wash. - A teenager is now in the hospital in critical condition after police responded to calls of a shooting in Tacoma late Thursday night.
Officers responded to the scene, near South 27th Street & South Yakima Avenue, at about 10:30 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired, said a Tacoma police spokesperson.
A 17-year-old boy was found in a car unresponsive and officers started CPR.
Medics were called in and the victim was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries.
No other information was immediately available. ....
