The Maine Cancer Foundation is announced Tuesday that they will be able to host an in-person 5k run at Southern Maine Community College this summer. The race will be held on Sunday, July 18 at 8:30 on the Tri For a Cure course at the typical finish line location on the campus of SMCC. Briefs ‘Virtual’ charity game raises $36,000 for children’s cancer Faced with a pandemic and health protocols limiting or prohibiting indoor gatherings, the 27th annual C-U Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge, organized and presented by Town & Country Federal Credit Union, was at risk of being canceled for the first time in its history. However, based on feedback from past participants and strong support from sponsors and volunteers, it was clear that the ‘shot’ must go on. Instead of a one-day, 3-on-3, co-ed tournament for adults and youth teams, this year’s event transitioned into a ‘virtual’ 3-on-3, free-throw competition. The competition, which ran from April 12 to May 8 raised $36,000 to support the Maine Children’s Cancer Program. ....

The only population that is growing in Maine, northern New England and the United States is the population of people of color, immigrants, and refugees. There are nearly 10,000 students of color and nearly 100,000 people of color living in Maine, and almost 2.5 million people of color in the tri-state area: Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. There is a great opportunity to recruit, hire, and retain people of color. ....

In 2005, the Navy and the federal government sent a message they had been dreading: the Brunswick Naval Air Station would close. But on May 31, 2011, the base officially closed. By that time, the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority had been working for several years to plan for life after the Navy. Steve Levesque was leading that work and still is, but said he still recalls the harsh reality of the closing. ....
