Coronvirus pretty much made face-to-face engagement between the public and government representatives temporarily impossible.
But the COVID-19 pandemic did not stop the lines of communication at several City Halls and municipal buildings around the state.
In the Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, municipal officials improvised when they closed the office last year.
“We knew we could not communicate normally,” said Lawrence Christian, Bethel Park’s manager. “You can’t be transparent enough.”
The local government posted its agenda and minutes on its website, including budgets and hired a part-time social media provider, produced its Quarterly Chronicles report and developed a system of having the mayor do two- to- three-minute discussions with constituents via their home phones, Christian said. ....

Lancaster city officials want input as they seek ways to make South Duke Street safer and easier to navigate as part of an effort to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
The city plans to spend $2.1 million for streetscape improvements on a half-mile stretch of South Duke Street from Church Street to Chesapeake Street. Suggestions from residents and others who use the area will be considered during the development in March of a concept plan, which will be unveiled by early June. To provide input, citizens should register for Engage Lancaster at engage.cityoflancasterpa.com.
The cityâs South Duke Street Mobility Project is part of the Vision Zero Action Plan, an international effort the city joined last year that has a goal of eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries. The cityâs work along South Duke Street will be paid for using $1.47 million in state transportation grants and $630,000 from city bond funds. ....

City of Lancaster seeks input from residents for planned improvement project
LANCASTER, Pennsylvania (WPMT) The City of Lancaster announced Friday it is seeking public input during the preliminary planning phase of the South Duke Street Mobility Project, which is intended to improve pedestrian infrastructure and streetscape design of a portion of the roadway stretching from Church St. to Chesapeake St.
The project came at the request of residents in the area and will foster safe, walkable and accessible streets for them and their neighbors, the city said in a press release.
“The investment in Safe Streets taking place in Southeast allows the community to be at the forefront of how to best make the streets of Lancaster safe for all citizens,” said Stephen Campbell, Director of Public Works. ....
