Jeannie Franceus strains against a tangle of poly wire fencing and posts. With nimble bare fingers she untangles strands of the white wire, then whips a short section of fence over a lush growth of prairie grasses, pulling hard and fastening it to a portable post. Curious Angus cows and their calves skitter around her, sniffing. It’s moving time.
With the fence tight, she dusts off her hands on the short walk back to her four-wheeler. “There’s something about the nurturing aspect of grazing cattle and moving cattle that gives me so much fulfillment,” says Franceus. “I love seeing them go onto fresh grass and I love connecting with them. They were all crowding around my four-wheeler the other night and one was actually nibbling on my hat.” ....

Ranchers affected by recent fires in South Dakota and surrounding states may have more questions than answers about how long they should wait before grazing pastures again. Long standing protocols suggest two growing seasons, but is that sufficient with current drought concerns? What plant health parameters should producers be looking for to make the best management decisions during the upcoming grazing season?
While pastures look particularly bleak in the aftermath of the recent Windy Fire in Adams County, North Dakota and Perkins County, South Dakota, the good news is that rangeland plants are highly resilient after a fire.
South Dakota State University Extension Rangeland Management Specialist Alexander Smart says that the bottom line from a range plant perspective is that a fire does not harm the plant itself. ....

South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award seeks nominees


Nominations and applications are now being accepted for the 2021 South Dakota Leopold Conservation Award
®. The $10,000 award honors ranchers, farmers and forestland owners who go above and beyond in their management of soil health, water quality and wildlife habitat on working land.
 
Sand County Foundation and national sponsor American Farmland Trust present the Leopold Conservation Award to private landowners in 21 states for extraordinary achievement in voluntary conservation. In South Dakota, the award is presented with the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association and the South Dakota Grassland Coalition. The 2020 recipient of the award was Blair Brothers Angus Ranch of Sturgis.
 
Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes landowners who inspire others with their dedication to land, water and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. In his influential 1949 book, “A Sand County Almanac,” Leopold called fo ....
