SOUTH JAMESPORT, NY Police have identified the missing Riverhead kayaker whose body was found Saturday night, authorities said. Raistlin Ruther, 18, was found in the water in the Hampton Bays area, police said. According to Riverhead Town Police, on Saturday at 4:13 p.m., a report came in about an overdue kayaker who had launched earlier in the day at 8 a.m. from West Street in South Jamesport into the Great Peconic Bay. Subscribe The Riverhead Police Department s dive team was activated and began conducting a search of area waterways while patrol units conducted searches of nearby beaches, police said. The size and scope of the search increased dramatically as daylight diminished and weather conditions worsened, police said. ....

The kayaker, identified by Riverhead Town police as Raistlin Ruther, had shoved off about 8 a.m. from West Street South Jamesport and was reported overdue to return to the Riverhead Town police about 4 p.m. A search was commenced a short time later that ultimately drew in emergency crews from multiple East End fire and police departments, as well as helicopters from the Suffolk County Police Department U.S. Coast Guard station on Cape Cod. ....

Leonard J. Orlando of South Jamesport died Dec. 18, 2020, in Riverhead. He was 77. The family will receive visitors Monday, Dec. 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the funeral home. Interment with U.S. Army honors will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
