After a week of severe storms that has hit the Grand Canyon, a storm Wednesday took out some of the Bright Angel Trail. National Park Service spokeswoman Kaitlyn Thomas says “we received quite a bit of rain (Wednesday) very rapidly.” She says because of that, “there was a small washout of the Bright Angel Trail which was enough to cause us to reroute the trail for our mules, who are taking the South Kaibab Trail now.” Thomas says the trail is still open to hikers. Earlier this week a storm led to two people being struck by lightning on the same trail. If you plan to hike the South Rim in the next week or so, keep your eyes on the weather because it can change in an instant in the summertime. ....

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature at Phantom Ranch, near the bottom of the Grand Canyon, hit 116 degrees on Saturday. On Sunday, it reached 115 degrees. According to the Associated Press, the temperature on the canyon s South Rim is roughly 20 degrees lower than at the bottom. Summer temperatures on exposed portions of the route may reach above 120 degrees in the shade, according to the Park Service, and rangers advise tourists to avoid trekking in the inner canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The majority of persons seeking emergency medical assistance in the canyon due to heat sickness do so within these hours, according to the statement. ....

Bystanders started CPR on Smith and National Park Service emergency medical personnel responded and assisted with resuscitation efforts, but park officials say all attempts to resuscitate the victim were unsuccessful. An investigation into the incident is being conducted by the Park Service in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
