The unnecessary and untimely death of Carl Reinboth, a respected harm reduction worker, mentor and advocate who was recently attacked on Somerset Street, came as a shock to the community of people he supported, and to the Chinatown neighbourhood where he was killed. We understand why, in the face of that shock, there are sudden and instinctive reactions. We also hope that in the light of day, we think more clearly about how we avoid these tragedies in the future.
We understand why, in the immediate aftermath of a senseless death, people turn to what they know. We have been told time and again that safety equals policing, and that is an idea that has been proven hard to shake. But more police, short of an officer on every street corner every hour of the day, would not have prevented what happened last month. ....

COVID-19 vaccine drop-in clinic pops up in Ottawa South

There are 600 vaccine appointments available at the clinic, which operates from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another clinic will be held at the same location on Friday. Proof of address must be presented in order to be eligible for a vaccine appointment.
This is a drop-in clinic, with no appointments necessary. It is similar to a clinic that opened in the Overbrook neighbourhood on Tuesday at the Overbrook Community Centre. That clinic handed out appointments for all 500 of its doses in under three hours. A second clinic in Overbrook will be held Thursday.
In a statement to CTV News, Ottawa Public Health said it was not advertising these pop-up clinics widely, but would instead target neighbours in a variety of ways on the ground, including door-knocking, flyers, emails and phone calls with the aid of community partners. ....

City of Ottawa to target all adults in high-risk neighbourhoods for vaccinations

OTTAWA
With Ottawa s COVID-19 supply set to increase, the city is poised to step up efforts to vaccinate people in the neighbourhoods hardest hit by the pandemic.
Ottawa Public Health’s plan to vaccinate all adults in high-risk communities will use a “targeted approach,” including pop-up clinics and other outreach measures, officials say.
These neighbourhoods will be the first areas of the city where everyone 18 and older will be eligible for shots.
Officials are expected to announce details of the rollout on Monday or Tuesday.
“It is super important to target everyone over the age of 18 in these neighbourhoods, because people living in these neighbourhoods are at higher risk,” said Kelli Tonner, executive director of the South-East Ottawa Community Health Centre. ....
