The McLain family has been selected as South Arkansas County’s 2021 Farm Family of the Year. Jay, his wife Megan, and their three daughters, 11-year-old Mollie, nine-year-old Macie, and three-year-old Micah, reside in DeWitt.
Jay and Megan raise soybeans, rice, and corn on 3100 acres and Jay has been farming for 22 years. In addition to their normal farming operation, they are involved in growing research plots with DONMARIO Seeds.
As the South Arkansas County Farm Family of the year, the McLain family will join 74 other county farm families in vying for district and state recognition as the Arkansas Farm Family of the Year. The Arkansas Farm Family of the Year will be announced in December at a banquet in Little Rock.
“We divide our money to meet different needs in South Arkansas County,” Wilson said.
Acres of Help members support the Ministerial Alliance, the Caring and Sharing Food Pantry in DeWitt, school backpack programs, Grand Prairie CASA, and The CALL in Arkansas County. Each year, the group holds a fundraising event in February.
“We are doing an auction because of COVID-19 this year. We normally have a banquet,” Wilson said.
The Acres of Help auction began Friday, Feb. 19, and will close Sunday, Feb. 28 at 10 p.m. Wilson said various items are up for bidding.
“We have anything from hours on combines, to lawnmowers to some good homemade desserts,” Wilson said.
