SAULT STE. MARIE The campus of Lake Superior State University has over 300 new trees thanks to a recent donation by the Superior Watershed Partnership and Land Conservancy.
A crew of four from Superior Watershed Partnership’s Great Lakes Climate Corps spent a week planting 339 strategically placed saplings across campus: 200 white spruce, 85 maple, 32 chokecherry, 12 white oak and 10 eastern white pine spanning the central heating plant, the Fletcher Center, the row houses, and the Center for Applied Science & Engineering Technology.
“In the planning stages of this project, we coordinated with the university to prioritize native species that provide both community and ecological benefits,” said Great Lakes Climate Corps Program Manager Tyler Penrod. “For example, the oaks and pines at the Fletcher Center will one day offer excellent hammocking as well as filter and absorb runoff before it enters th ....

SAULT STE. MARIE Morrie Walworth, vice president for finance and operations at Lake Superior State University, has announced his retirement effective Aug. 1, 2021.
Holding numerous academic and administrative positions at LSSU over an illustrious 30-year career, he has been chief financial officer since January 2016. A search is underway to fill the position.
“I’ve been fortunate to wear many hats at LSSU: professor, department chair, associate dean, dean, provost, and, ultimately, CFO,” said Walworth in a university press release. “I’m grateful for the variety of opportunities to further, as our strategic plan puts it, student learning and development; diversity, inclusion, and belonging; community partnerships and engagement; sustainability; and fiscal resilience and operational excellence.” ....

University gives St. Marys River clean, green boost

High school students, community groups and Lake Superior State University will use landscaping this summer to reduce pollution flowing into the St. Marys River.
The project recently received $250,000 from the United States Forest Service as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program that protects Great Lakes drinking water and habitat.
Stormwater carries things like trash and bacteria from the city, through the drainage systems and into the river, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.  Landscaping, also known as green infrastructure in this context, reduces or treats stormwater runoff on its way to a river or lake. ....
