CAMPAIGNERS cautiously welcomed the extension of a scheme to help vulnerable families pay their food and bills during the pandemic, while stressing that a “long-term replacement” was needed. Work and Pensions Secretary Theresa Coffey announced on Wednesday that the Covid Grant Scheme would be continued until June 20, with an additional £40 million in funding. The programme, first rolled out in November, was due to expire in mid-April, but Ms Coffey told MPs that it was being extended because “some restrictions on the economy continue.” However, national poverty charity Turn2us said there “must be a long-term solution to a long-term problem.” ....
