Bethel father sees charges dismissed in daughter’s drowning Modified: 1/29/2021 10:06:34 PM WHITE RIVER JUNCTION A Bethel man accused of failing to watch his 18-month-old daughter when she drowned in the White River in 2019 has seen the charges related to her death dismissed as part of a plea deal. Isaac McEwan, 22, was initially charged with abandoning a child and obstruction of justice following the death of his daughter, Heaven McEwan. Instead, he pleaded guilty in Windsor Superior Court on Friday to violation of probation, two counts of simple assault and disorderly conduct for two unrelated assault cases. As part of the plea deal, the neglect and obstruction charges were dismissed, and he was sentenced to up to one year in prison for violating his probation, as well as a suspended one-year jail sentence and two years of probation. ....
Hartford woman gets probation in toddler’s drowning case Modified: 1/14/2021 11:01:01 PM WHITE RIVER JUNCTION A 29-year-old Hartford woman was placed on probation Thursday for failing to keep a close eye on her boyfriend’s toddler, who drowned in the White River, and then lying to police about it. Laura Shaw, 29, pleaded guilty during a virtual hearing in Windsor Superior Court Thursday to one count of reckless endangerment and one count of giving false information to a police officer in connection with the July 2019 death of 18-month-old Heaven McEwan. Prosecutors have said Shaw was drinking alcohol and looking at her phone, rather than watching the girl during an outing to the river, and that she later lied about what she was doing before Heaven’s death. ....
