A prefab unit in every backyard
The Los Angeles real estate financiers currently remaking downtown’s failed Horton Plaza shopping mall into a high-tech office hub have put another building bullseye on San Diego, based on a new help-wanted advertisement making the rounds online.
Stockdale Capital Partners, headed by
Steve Yari, is seeking a San Diego-based director of construction and development for a new firm currently dubbed Domo Modular. “This role includes hiring, training, developing, and managing others, including scheduling projects, initiatives, and team workloads,” says the job notice. The coming Weber-Gonzalez catfight

Toni’s wild funding spree
Shirley Weber, the San Diego Democrat and former Assemblywoman, named California Secretary of State by Gov.
Gavin Newsom to replace
Alex Padilla, continues to collect big cash for next year’s campaign. Latest to kick in is state Senate Pro Tem
Toni Atkins, whose 2020 reelection fund gave $8100 on February 22. The Atkins move makes more likely a nasty catfight between Weber and Assembly Democrat
Lorena Gonzalez unless Gonzalez, who has long coveted the job, backs off in the face of Weber’s growing cash might. According to disclosures, the Atkins senate campaign kitty, which finished 2020 with a daunting $1.7 million in the bank, has been dribbling its largesse out to various recipients in the new year. ....

Mayor's Office Denial Over 101 Ash St Deal Raises More Questions |

Editor-at-Large
A spokesperson for San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer denies the Mayor engaged in political maneuvers that led to the City leasing the 101 Ash St. building, but the Mayor has not directly disputed the allegations or demanded a retraction.
Mayor Kevin Faulconer
The statement was in response to a September 11, 2020, story in La Prensa San Diego that reported allegations that Mayor Faulconer made the decision to pursue a lease instead of a purchase of the now-vacated building in order to distance himself from then-owner “Papa” Doug Manchester, one of his biggest campaign donors and political supporters.
Several persons that attended a high-level meeting in the Mayor’s office on September 6, 2016, confirm that Faulconer directed staff to only pursue a lease even after he was informed the change would cost taxpayers at least $16 million more than a direct purchase. ....

Column: The myth of the San Diego City Council’s Democratic majority [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
There appeared to be a moment of optimism for San Diego city government last week as Mayor Todd Gloria and five new council members were sworn in to office.
They talked about rising out of these difficult times and coming together to move San Diego forward with vision.
But appearances can be deceiving.
The relative comity of the remote ceremony was bracketed by a tense, weeks-long campaign for City Council president beforehand and by an explosive council meeting later that day to determine who would win the job Dr. Jennifer Campbell or Monica Montgomery Steppe, both Democrats. ....
