(WECT) - A school building at Southport Christian School looks to be a total loss after a fire started in the ceiling. âA lot of damage in the fire area â those four rooms. And it did push through the entire attic it looks like â so with the water damage and the smoke damage itâs probably unfortunately going to be a total loss, but I canât make that determination,â said Assistant Fire Chief Todd Coring of the Southport Fire Department. ....
BOLIVIA Tyler Louis Johnson, 36, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021. Tyler was born in Olathe, Kansas, and graduated from DeSoto High School. He had been a volunteer in the Johnson County Fire Department in Kansas. Upon moving to North Carolina, he was a firefighter with Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Department. He then became the chief of the Southport Rescue Squad. When the Southport Rescue Squad and the Southport Fire Department merged, he became the deputy chief and then assistant chief in the Southport Fire Department. He had also served with the Oak Island Fire and Rescue, Pender County Fire and Rescue and worked part time with Brunswick County EMS as an AEMT. ....

(WECT) - Southport Chief of Police Todd Coring has been named law enforcement officer of the year by the The American Legion of North Carolina. Coring, who took over as Chief of Police in 2018, will now be in the running for law enforcement officer of the year in the Legionâs national competition. Prior to taking the position of chief in 2018, Coring spent 20 years with the Brunswick County Sheriffâs Office and also serves with the Southport Fire Department. He made the transition to Police Chief after leaving the Brunswick County Sheriffâs Office and serving as Southportâs mayor pro tem. ....
