Fahim Siddiqi/White Star KARACHI: A book titled Hostility: A Diplomat’s Diary on Pakistan-India Relations by Pakistan’s former high commissioner to India Abdul Basit was launched at the Institute of Business Management (IoBM) on Saturday afternoon. Introducing the book to the audience, Ambassador Basit said the Foreign Service officers think that when they retire they’d share their experiences with the people of Pakistan by penning them down. This was also his intention: to write a memoir covering his career from 1982 to 2017. When in 2009 he became the Foreign Office’s spokesperson he thought now he was seeing things firsthand, participating in decision making. It was a challenging period for Pakistan Salala check-post attack, the Raymond Davis case, etc, had happened. From there, he was posted in Germany as Pakistan’s ambassador and the focus there was mostly on economics. ....

National April 20, 2021 LAHORE: Ambassador (retd) Abdul Basit’s book “Hostility: A Diplomat’s Diary of Pakistan-India Relations” was launched at the Afkar-e-Taza ThinkFest Online in conversation with Najam Sethi on Monday. According to a press release, when asked by Najam Sethi about why he termed his appointment to New Delhi “sui generis”, Basit explained when he was Pakistan’s ambassador to Germany, he was called by then prime minister Nawaz Sharif and told to wrap up in Berlin as he was being appointed the foreign secretary. “I went back and made all my farewell calls, and then abruptly I was told that I was not going to be the foreign secretary,” stated Abdul Basit. “Obviously I could no longer stay in Berlin and so asked for a transfer, and was given New Delhi,” he noted. “I was hurt but New Delhi is usually a dream appointment and so I thought it was a compensation for the foreign secretaryship,’ explained Basit. ....

Pakistan needs to immediately revisit its Kashmir diplomacy, believes Ambassador Abdul Basit
Ambassador Abdul Basit is a retired Pakistani diplomat who served also as former high commissioner of Pakistan to India. He is the President of, Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) which is an Islamabad-based Think Tank. Islamabad, Pakistan: “Islamabad needs to immediately revisit its Kashmir diplomacy and inject some vigour and vim into it.” This was said by Ambassador Abdul Basit who had served in India for long before his retirement.
