SIR – In the 1960s, I worked for the industrial group of the UK Atomic Energy Authority. Its head, Sir Christopher Hinton, told staff that they would be subject to a pay freeze for five years. Many, myself included, left the authority, which thereafter was no longer at the forefront of developing atomic energy for industrial purposes.
The budget for the development programme, which concentrated on nuclear reactors for power generation, was slashed by the government of the day with no regard for the long-term implications that are now evident in our dependence on foreign resources (Leading Article, July 27).
The cranes have been assembled on the Sellafield SIXEP Continuity Plant site. It means that the project is able to accelerate into the construction phase, with the pouring of concrete and erection of re-enforcing steel. The plant is one of a portfolio of projects being delivered under the Programme and Projects Partnership model. The model, which is unique in the UK construction industry, is transforming major project delivery at Sellafield. It brings together KBR, Jacobs, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure Ltd, Doosan Babcock and Sellafield Ltd as the fifth partner. It is helping to drive improvements in procurement, and job creation, amongst other benefits.
