Turnout light for fire/EMS forum MOUNT DESERT Fewer than a dozen people who are neither town officials nor associated with the Northeast Harbor Ambulance service attended Tuesday’s virtual forum on the idea of spending up to $357,500 for engineering and design work for the proposed expansion of the fire station in Northeast Harbor to accommodate fire and EMS personnel and equipment. Citizens will be asked to authorize that expenditure at the annual Town Meeting on Tuesday, May 4. Most of those who attended the forum, held via Zoom, didn’t comment or ask questions. Mount Desert resident John Adams was the only one who expressed skepticism about the wisdom of the proposed expansion. He asked why the town couldn’t, instead, rent a house or condominium near the fire station as living quarters for fire and EMS personnel. ....

Town Hall addition eyed for fire, ambulance and police MOUNT DESERT Rather than construct a new building in Northeast Harbor for the fire department and ambulance service, as Fire Chief Mike Bender proposed two months ago, town officials are now considering the idea of adding onto the Town Hall building to provide more space for those services, as well as for the police department. The Board of Selectmen voted Monday to authorize paying Hedefine Engineering & Design up to $10,000 to prepare a concept floor plan and construction cost estimate for a two-story addition. Bender told the selectmen more than a year ago that, due to the increasing shortage of volunteer firefighters, the town would need to hire more full-time personnel to provide around-the-clock coverage. That, in turn, would mean the fire department would need to provide sleeping quarters, he said. ....
