Island Police: COVID-weary vandals take frustration out on school property

A resident called police on April 6 around 11:30 a.m. to report harassment and was given a statement form to fill out regarding the incident. 
An injured or sick raccoon was reported to police around 4:45 p.m. on April 6. After capture and an investigation, the animal control officer determined the raccoon had likely left its den and was feeling groggy due to semi-hibernation. The raccoon was returned to the wild. 
No one was injured in an accident involving two cars at the intersection of Main Street and Seal Cove Road around 4:30 p.m. on April 8. A 2020 Chevrolet Trax was waiting to turn onto Main Street at the intersection when it was hit from behind by a 2004 Hyundai Elantra driven by Jacob Peabody, 18, from Southwest Harbor. According to the police report, Shannon Snurkowski, 48, from Southwest Harbor, was stopped at the intersection preparing to turn ....

Mount Desert Police Department asked for help in locating a dump truck that had lost some of its load in that town and was believed to be traveling to Southwest Harbor on March 24 around 11 a.m. Officers were able to find the truck and talk to the driver about contacting the MDPD and retrieving its lost load.
A woman called police around 7 p.m. on March 24 to report her daughter had hit a deer with her vehicle while traveling on Seawall Road. According to the woman, the deer had died as a result of the crash, and the vehicle was off the road, out of traffic. ....

Oceanside Harbor users unhappy with Police Department oversight

Oceanside Harbor users are asking the city to reorganize its marine public safety program to improve the harbor’s lifeguarding, patrol and rescue services.
Police Department officers have shouldered public safety at the harbor for years, but some boaters say the police spend increasing amounts of their time patrolling in town instead of on the waterfront.
Also, sometimes new police officers assigned to the harbor have little ocean experience and are not trained or ready for the rapid response needed to save a vessel on fire in the harbor or in danger of sinking on the open sea.
“Some change is going to have to come,” said Les George, a retired Vista firefighter who’s rented a slip at the Oceanside harbor for 40 years and had a charter business there for 26 years. ....

Fennelly, Hecker Honored For Their Impacts On Maritime Community

Global Maritime Ministries (GMM), a New Orleans-based organization that serves seafarers and inland mariners who call on ports in southeast Louisiana, along with the region’s broader maritime community, typically presents a pair of awards to local maritime leaders during its annual gala event. With ongoing restrictions due to COVID-19, though, Global Maritime Ministries Executive Director Philip Vandercook took the awards to the recipients’ places of work, bringing a personal touch to a season otherwise marked by virtual events and video calls.
GMM’s annual awards include the Crystal Lighthouse Award, which honors an individual’s leadership within the maritime community, and the John P.
