SOUTHWEST HARBOR There were 147 votes cast on Tuesday during the election portion of Southwest Harbor’s annual Town Meeting. All races were uncontested, with all but the one seat on the Board of Selectmen going to incumbents. Dan Norwood was the only candidate for the open Board of Selectmen seat, and he won with 128 votes. Susan Allen and John Bench were reelected to their seats on the Southwest Harbor School Committee. Ann Ratcliff was reelected to serve on the Mount Desert Island High School Board of Trustees. ....
Pre-K, additional teacher and windows increase budget SOUTHWEST HARBOR With the additional items of a pre-K program, window replacements for each stairwell and a new fifth–grade teacher position, the proposed FY22 budget for Pemetic Elementary School is expected to increase by 3.64 percent. If the increase remains at the current proposed total, it equates to a 1.16 percent increase in the town appropriation, which means a difference of $7.50 per $100,000 of property value. Although the school committee has reviewed the budget twice, it has yet to approve it and it still needs to go before the Board of Selectmen and Warrant Committee. ....

Learning in 2021 looks different from a few years ago because of the first dive into technology that was needed during the pandemic. Schools in the neighborhood are adjusting their budgets in response. “Every student currently has a device. Every adult has a device, ”Pemetic elementary school principal Rhonda Fortin told the Southwest Harbor School Committee during a recent preliminary budget review of the Zoom meeting on Jan. 13. ....
Island Briefs No additional ships in 2021 BAR HARBOR At this week’s Town Council meeting, council members voted to add no additional cruise ships to the existing schedule for the 2021 season. They also accepted the advice of Town Manager Cornell Knight who suggested the council hire the Portland-based Pan Atlantic Consultants to conduct research, generate and distribute a survey about cruise ships. “The estimate would be $12,600… they can complete the [survey] work by the end of March, but they would just need to start this month,” said Knight. Council member Jill Golthwait’s proposed motion to add no additional cruise ships for the 2021 season was seconded by council member Erin Cough and passed unanimously. The motion to accept the consultant hiring advice from the town manager was enacted by council member Gary Friedmann and passed unanimously as well. ....
