Scientists are stepping up the fight against an invasive tree pest of sweet chestnut trees - Oriental Chestnut Gall Wasp - the UK’s Chief Plant Health Officer announced today.
Approval has been given for the release of a parasitoid wasp called Torymus sinensis, a natural biological control agent, to help reduce the spread of Oriental Chestnut Gall Wasp in England to protect the health of sweet chestnut trees. ....

Future of UK treescapes – UKRI

UKRI (NERC, AHRC and ESRC), Defra, Welsh government and Scottish government invite proposals for grants as part of the Future of UK treescapes programme.
The call will support grants that address one or more of the programme’s themes:
theme one: forms, functions and values of UK treescapes
theme two: opportunities, barriers and pathways for expansion of UK treescapes
theme three: resilience of UK treescapes to global change.
Proposals are expected to take an interdisciplinary approach bringing together environmental scientists, social scientists, economists and, arts and humanities researchers to form substantial research collaborations.
Proposals that only involve collaboration between researchers within the remit of a single research council are out of scope. ....

90 families are being supported by a new Stratford Foodbank project focused on delivering fresh food parcels to those struggling in the area.

While you might associate the Foodbank with non-perishable items such as tined food, the organisation has recently teamed up with Hunscote Farm Shop, VASA, Stratfordâs volunteer transport group, to supply fresh food to families identified as being in need of support.
The 25-week project, which is backed by Warwickshire County Council and the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs, began in November.
It sees each family receive Â£20 of locally produced fresh meat, fruit and vegetables each week. ....
