Champions: Rifle Bears clinch state title

Chelsea Self / Post Independent
Rifle Senior Embrey Marantino had just finished the game with 201 yards and two touchdowns. Riding the bus back to Rifle, it took just two words for him to sum up how it felt to win the 3A state title:
Cloud Nine.
“Like, if you would’ve asked me two or three months ago if we would’ve even been in the playoffs, I would’ve said heck no,” Marantino added. “I didn’t even think we were going to make it to the playoffs, much less win the state final. But a lot of us have been playing since we were six and seven… we’ve been playing for a long time, and it’s just a very special brotherhood we share. We’re trying to prove how strong it is and just how amazing we’ve done and how much we can stick together, and that’s what really won it for us.” ....

Vidakovich column: Hold onto your hats

Epic. Unforgettable. The stuff of legends.
The last time I watched a football game this good in Glenwood, the field was not named after Nick Stubler. That’s because he was my PE teacher at Glenwood Springs High School and one of the assistant coaches on the football team at the time.
It was a chilly November Friday evening in the fall of 1978 and the undefeated Demons were taking dead aim at those undefeated Roaring Fork Rams from up the road in Carbondale. Leading up to the game, the Glenwood Post ran a two-page story on the contest that would decide the Northwestern League championship, titled “Hold onto Your Hats. It’s Demons vs Rams.” ....

Rifle prepares for highly anticipated playoff game with Glenwood Springs

Ray K. Erku / Post Independent
Former Rifle Bears standout turned starting running back for Western Colorado University Ty Leyba remembers it like it was yesterday.
“I think my best one was actually in the headline in the newspaper the next morning on the front page,” the 2016 Rifle graduate recalled. “It was a long touchdown on one of the first drives against Glenwood.”
It was the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A 1st Team All-Stater’s junior year. The win was so good, during an internship at a Glenwood Springs accounting firm sometime later, Leyba said he’d sneakily pin the newspaper clipping to his boss’s office door. The head honcho, of course, was a Demons football coach. ....
