LEWISTON In close votes Monday night, the School Committee rejected a motion to require masks in schools and approved a motion that makes mask-wearing optional.
The approval came after nearly two and half hours of debate on Superintendent Jake Langlais’ back-to-school recommendations for the fall.
Optional mask-wearing was among the proposals and the only one to evoke disagreement.
“This is a personal/family decision,” Langlais wrote in a memo to the committee. “We recommend that you wear a mask if you are unvaccinated.” ....

Lewiston board supports local tax increase for schools

The proposed school budget is $95.72 million.
By using $2.6 million in relief funds in the 2021-22 spending plan, Langlais was able to avoid cuts, he said.
Relief funds can be spent on things that are pandemic-related, such as technology software, facilities improvements and staff training in social-emotional learning, he said.
Expenses that would remain in the general fund as recurring costs include one new nurse, dyslexia training and existing staff.
The superintendent said Wednesday night that the committee’s option would allow use of pandemic funds “in a smart way and reduce the use of carryover so we can say in two years we have money in the bank and we can sustain some efforts.” ....

Lewiston board approves YouTube use for students

LEWISTON Students in Lewiston Public Schools will be allowed access to YouTube videos on district-owned devices, the School Committee decided Monday night.
Superintendent Jake Langlais made the recommendation Jan. 4, but the committee wanted to know what other districts were doing.
“I’ve heard from colleagues and peers around the state and got heavy input from other Western Maine superintendents,” Langlais said Monday. “Almost everyone uses YouTube.”
The internet platform offers educational material that would greatly enrich remote instruction, he said earlier this month.
He repeated Monday night that there is a risk of students watching inappropriate or even harmful videos that get past the district’s internet filters. ....

Lewiston board defeats motion to close schools after holiday break

LEWISTON The School Committee on Monday night voted 3-6 against a motion to move schools to fully remote instruction for two weeks after the Christmas break to limit a potential “holiday spread” of COVID-19.
In making the motion, member Kiernan Majerus-Collins noted that statewide cases had hit another record high as the virus continued to surge in the wake of Thanksgiving gatherings.
“We’ve seen this close intermingling during the holidays, and that is no doubt tied to the spike,” he said, “and there will be a spike after Christmas.”
Giving families and school employees three weeks’ notice would be better than having to close schools with no notice if outbreaks occurred, he said. ....
