Sign Up Scotland’s island communities are renowned for their resourcefulness, building up successful renewables, energy and fishing industries – overcoming the challenges thrown up by their geographical location. Our islands are also world-class tourist destinations with visitors from all over the world drawn to their spectacular beauty, unrivalled heritage and the welcoming hotels and bed and breakfasts. And as we come out of the pandemic and the UK Government drives the economic recovery, we will make sure islands thrive and islanders prosper.

Scottish islands secure green hydrogen funding

A focus on the energy transition and a green hydrogen hub will form key parts of a £100m plan to boost the economic prosperity of the Orkney, Shetland and the Outer Hebrides islands. The agreement outlines plans for the UK and Scottish governments to each invest £50m in the future economic prosperity of the three island regions.  The Heads of Terms for the Islands Growth deal includes plans for an Islands Centre for Net Zero, which would support the energy transition for all three island groups. It is hoped this would create sustainable “green” jobs within the islands for 300 people.
