Northland news in brief: Sandcastle comp on again; and stolen sick puppy returned

Two popular summer events the beach dig and the sandcastle competition will return to Paihia later this month. The beach dig, in which kids search the sand for prizes, will be held from 10am on Saturday, January 23, opposite Paihia s Stone Church, while the sandcastle competition will be held along the length of the beach from noon the following Saturday. Judging will start at 2pm with prizegiving at 2.30pm. Bay of Islands Rotary is organising the beach dig and putting on a sausage sizzle while the Sandpit Bar is sponsoring the sandcastle challenge. The free events were part of the long-running Paihia Summer Festival which came to an end in 2018 after funding fizzled out. ....

A sick 10-week-old puppy was allegedly stolen from the back of a Northland animal rescue van as it was parked outside a vet in Kawakawa on Tuesday afternoon.
Gus, a gentled-natured snow-coloured staffie-cross, was rescued two weeks ago by Bay of Islands Animal Rescue and his theft has left the group s founder, Summer Johnson, devastated. ....

CCTV captures puppy being snatched from rescue van outside Northland vet clinic

The crate door was left open.
CCTV from a nearby dairy captured the alleged theft on camera and shows a man carrying the white staffy cross while running to a white car before it takes off.
Two other people left in the car with the man.
Johnson said she was “absolutely gutted” that Gus had been taken.

Gus was surrendered from outside the area, so there is “no way” there is a connection between his previous owners and the alleged theft, Summer Johnson says.
