Writer, producer and actor Lena Waithe is launching a new record label, Hillman Grad Records. A joint venture partnership with Def Jam Recordings, the label looks to develop a new generation of underrepresented artists.
“Music and storytelling have always gone hand in hand. And I think that’s because musicians are the storytellers we love the most,” Waithe, who won an Emmy in 2017 for a
Master of None episode she wrote, said in a statement. “They can take complex emotions and simplify it in four minutes, the same artist can sing about the revolution and falling in love. Lena Waithe and Def Jam Announce New Hillman Grad Records
The new label is aimed at identifying and developing artists in hopes of priming them for long-term success. By leveraging opportunities across music, TV & film, our goal is to capitalize on the cultural significance generated when these worlds meaningfully intersect.
Joining Waithe at Hillman Grad Records will be experienced music executives Tebs Maqubela and Albert Cooke. Head of A&R Tebs Maqubela joins Hillman Grad Records from Columbia Records, where as an A&R executive he signed and developed talent. Hillman Grad Records General Manager Albert Cooke previously spent years at Island Def Jam as an Artist Development executive before heading to Soundcloud, where he was instrumental in the Artist Relations department. Maqubela and Cooke will report to Lena Waithe (CEO) and Rishi Rajani (President of Film & TV) of Hillman Grad Productions. ....

SoundCloud has added Q&A founder and CEO
Troy Carter to its board of directors. He will serve as a strategic advisor to SoundCloud CEO
Michael Weissman and the company’s board of directors across all music industry topics, including new business models, artist development and artist services.
Carter’s appointment arrives with SoundCloud’s renewed focus on “building deeper, more direct relationships with artists, labels, and music fans,” according to a release. He will continue separately leading Q&A.
“Troy is one of the few leaders that have operated and succeeded in all sides of the music industry. And, at all times, Troy is one step ahead of the pack,” said Weissman in a statement. “We share the same vision and excitement for SoundCloud’s potential to shape the future of the music business.
