Harry’s Helpings continues at Pine Island United Methodist
By PAULETTE LeBLANC - | Jul 20, 2021
Pine Island United Methodist Church is continuing its participation with Harry’s Helpings, a summer program offered through the Harry Chapin Food Bank until the end of August.
The church is provided with pre-sorted boxes of food and people can pick up these boxes on Saturday mornings from 9-11 a.m.
Since the number of participants has varied so greatly from week to week, it’s important for people to know they are welcome to this food if they need it, said organizer Beverly Brewer.
There are no special requirements or information other than giving your name and the number of people in specified age groups within your household. One person is also able to pick up food for multiple families, as long as they have the necessary information.

That’s why the fire department is teaming up with Lee County Emergency Management to prepare everyone for hurricane season via a seminar at the Pine Island United Methodist Church on Thursday, July 8, at 5:30 p.m.
Mickuleit said he expects a good turnout for the seminar. He said over the years, there have been 100-plus attendees for the PowerPoint presentation, which will cover a number hurricane preparedness topics, such as what to have in your ready-kit, prescription refills, pet planning, flood zones and shelter locations.

Multiple theologically progressive congregations in the United Methodist Church are in the process of leaving the mainline Protestant denomination due to its stance on LGBT issues.
For decades, the UMC has debated whether to change its biblically-based position on homosexuality, labeling it as sinful, its ban on the ordination of noncelibate homosexuals, and defining marriage as only being between one man and one woman.
Although many expect a large number of conservative congregations to eventually leave the UMC because of the debate and form their own denomination, in recent months, some liberal congregations have already decided to exit.
