RED DEER The operator of two affordable housing complexes in Red Deer faces fines for multiple safety code violations. Last year, Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) conducted fire inspections at two properties, the Stan Schalk Apartments and the Buffalo Apartments, which resulted in Safety Codes Act charges to the owner of both properties, Potter’s Hands Development Ltd. “We have been working closely with the property owner for some time, but unfortunately reached a point where charges were necessary to outline the gravity of the situation,” said Fire Marshal Tim Kivell. “Our priority is ensuring the safety of residents living in these facilities.” ....
Dining igloos draw scrutiny from RI fire marshal The dome-shaped enclosures hit the chic rooftop dining scene long before COVID-19 shook up the restaurant industry. In Rhode Island, fire marshals noticed the igloo-like structures about a year before the pandemic, according to state Fire Marshal Tim McLaughlin. And since then, the transparent plastic domes have only grown in popularity, helping restaurateurs seat additional guests outdoors through the winter. However, McLaughlin told The Providence Journal he’s aware of only two brands of igloo enclosures that comply with the state’s fire code. Some local restaurants, perhaps as many as a half-dozen, erred by acquiring an enclosure manufactured by Alvantor, which in a restaurant setting does not comply with the standard established by the National Fire Protection Association, McLaughlin said. ....
Heroic man dies trying to save uncle from fire Updated Jan 07, 2021; Fire crews responded to the West Warwick home just after 3 a.m., Fire Chief Jeffrey Varone said. The victim could have escaped the building on his own, but went to wake up his uncle first, the chief said. “The uncle was able to get out a window, unfortunately the individual who originally found the fire succumbed,” the chief told WPRI-TV at the scene. “It was a heroic act for him to go and save his uncle rather than to just save himself and get out,” Varone said later. The uncle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. ....
