Going back in time 18 years ago this week, I’ve dug out the second of the two anti-war mixes I did around the time of the Iraq war kicking off. There were plenty of songs to choose from as you can imagine and I remember performing a version of this live at the Autechre ATP, arriving super late, just as I was due to go on and setting up on stage with 2 decks and a CDJ and tearing through this in a burst of adrenalin. The new Styles We Paid For (GBV/Rockathon) opens with the unforgettable minor-key riff of âMegaphone Rileyâ and never lets up. The band occasionally shows it can handle a long-form song with aplomb, like the nearly five-minute âSlaughterhouse,â but itâs the upbeat direct hits like âMr. Childâ and âNever Abandon Shipâ where GbV shines. The problem is that each new release can make you forget the best moments of the last, in this case the early fall album ....
