NPWS Richmond Area Manager Damien Hofmeyer said the purpose of the burn is to reduce bushfire risk to the Evans Head township and surrounding properties. “Subject to favourable weather conditions, the 50-hectare burn will focus on the area bounded to the north by Evans Head-Woodburn Rd and to the west by Wallum Drive. “Smoke may be visible to residents in Evans Head over the two-day period. If you are vulnerable to smoke, we encourage you to stay indoors and keep your doors and windows closed to reduce exposure.

Ideal weather conditions have enabled this essential hazard reduction burn beside Pioneers Park which is intended to improve fire protection for Park and neighbours. Fire plays an important part in the health on our native bushland areas and the burn at Malabar will help protect significant natural heritage values within the national park. All walking tracks in Malabar Headland National Park (Western Section) will be closed during the hazard reduction burn and may remain closed for a day or two afterwards, while the mop-up operations are completed.

NPWS Central Coast Area Manager Steve Atkins said the 8.1-hectare burn will take place between Killcare and Putty Beach. “The burn is in a strategic location to reduce fuel loads and reduce the risk of wildfire impacting on residential properties in Killcare Heights and Putty Beach Campground infrastructure,” said Mr Atkins. “There may be smoke impacts for residents in Macdonald Street and Jacqueline Avenue, Killcare Heights. Date Time Hazard reduction burn underway in Bournda Nature Reserve The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is conducting a hazard reduction burn in Bournda Nature Reserve today, Friday 16 April. NPWS South Coast Branch Director Kane Weeks said the planned 131 hectares burn was lit earlier this morning. “This strategic burn is taking advantage of favorable weather conditions forecast over the coming days to reduce fuel loads in the area and to limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties,” Mr Weeks said. “During the burn, which is expected to run into the weekend, smoke may be visible to motorists on Sapphire Coast Drive and Moncks Road.
