Emergency services say the easiest way to thank front line heroes this Christmas is to slow down behind the wheel.
There s been more fatal crashes on our roads this year compared to 2019 already - and that s before the most dangerous season of the year.
Chief Superintendent Ray McMahon says Gardai are concerned about the potential for road accidents as county restrictions lift and people travel home for Christmas.

New road safety campaign fronted by emergency services launched in response to rise in road deaths

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), An Garda Síochána, Dublin Fire Brigade and the Department of Transport, are urging road users to act responsibly and safely when using the roads throughout the Christmas and New Year period. The call was made at the launch of a new road safety campaign, which is fronted by members of the emergency services.
There has been an increase in fatalities on Irish roads in 2020, and with the period between Christmas and New Year’s a traditionally dangerous time on the roads, the new campaign aims to encourage road users to be extra cautious over the festive period. ....

There have been 143 fatalities on Irish roads to date this year, 12 more deaths compared to 2019 despite traffic volumes have reduced by approximately 30% on average this year due to the pandemic.
The Road Safety Authority, An Garda Síochána, Dublin Fire Brigade and the Department of Transport are urging road users to act responsibly and safely when using the roads throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
The call was made at the launch of a new road safety campaign.
