Funding will advance ethical AI research
BERRYVILLE, Va., Jan. 27, 2021 – The Berryville Institute of Machine Learning (BIML), a research think tank dedicated to safe, secure and ethical development of AI technologies, announced today that it is the recipient of a $150,000 grant from Open Philanthropy.
BIML, which is already well known in ML circles for its pioneering document, “Architectural Risk Analysis of Machine Learning Systems: Toward More Secure Machine Learning,” will use the Open Philanthropy grant to further its scientific research on Machine Learning risk and get the word out more widely through talks, tutorials, and publications. 
In a future where machine learning shapes the trajectory of humanity, we ll need to see substantially more attention on thoroughly analyzing ML systems from a security and safety standpoint, said Catherine Olsson, Senior Program Associate for Potential Risks from Advanced Artificial Intelligence at Open Philanthropy. Thanks to continued production records, Impossible Foods is kicking off the new year by cutting prices on its open-coded products globally for foodservice distributors who sell to restaurants.
Impossible Foods is lowering prices on average by approximately 15% on its open-coded foodservice products in the United States, including its quarter-pound (4 oz) and third-pound (5.33 oz) Impossible Burger patties, versatile 5-pound Impossible Burger bulk packages, and Impossible™ Sausage Made From Plants patties.
Impossible Foods is also lowering prices for distributors in Canada, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau. The double-digit international price cuts, which vary by location and begin rolling out this month, apply to all Impossible foodservice products sold overseas. ....

The 221b Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by Sherlock Biosciences to address the global COVID-19 pandemic and diverse representation in STEM, today announced an initiative with the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) in Nepal to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 throughout the country. With contributions from Sherlock Biosciences, Open Philanthropy, Integrated DNA Technologies and MoHP, The 221b Foundation will provide support to the country of Nepal through financial assistance and donations of equipment and Sherlock„¢ CRISPR SARS-CoV-2 kits, which the country has designated as an essential diagnostic test for combating the pandemic. Researchers find cheap, easy way to disinfect N95 masks

Once exposed to methylene blue, the solution, when exposed to bright light, continues to inactivate the coronavirus days.
A small amount of methylene blue, with a large dose of sunlight or bright light, is all that’s needed to inactivate the coronavirus on N95 masks. These are the gold standard for masks among health-care workers. This method also works on some other personal protection equipment, or PPE, so needed by medical workers, a new study released December 11 concluded.
The findings were part of a 6-month-long DeMaND study (Development of Methods for Mask and N95 Decontamination), which involves researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, from the World Health Organization, and from 12 institutions, including the University of Washington School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Research Institute. ....
