BERTHOUD PASS A solo backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche Saturday, Dec. 26, on Berthoud Pass in nearby Grand County.
Grand County Search and Rescue responded to a call of an overdue backcountry skier at about 3 p.m. Saturday. The skier was in the area of Chimney Chute in the First Creek Drainage of Berthoud Pass, according to a report from the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
Search and rescue volunteers found a recent avalanche in the area when they arrived. Crews searched the avalanche path and found the skier fully buried, according to rescue team officials. ....

Summit County has two chances for light snow this week


Summit County will continue its dry pattern this week with high winds lasting into Tuesday, Dec. 22, and two chances for light snow.
On Sunday, Dec. 20, the National Weather Service issued a high wind warning in the mountains of Summit County through 5 p.m. due to a forecast of 25-50 mph winds with gusts as high as 75 mph. Lisa Kriederman, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Boulder, said Sunday’s high winds will continue into Monday and Tuesday but will decrease slightly in intensity with gusts in the 30-40 mph range.
Kriederman said a weather system will roll into the area Tuesday afternoon and evening bringing light snow. She expected the storm would bring just a few inches. Sam Collentine, Open Snow meteorologist, called for 3-6 inches from Tuesday night through midday Wednesday in his Breckenridge Ski Resort snow report ....

Snowfall is below average this season, but expert says La Niña could turn things around

Summit County and Colorado are experiencing below average snowfall early this season, but La Niña could help.
At a Colorado River District webinar Wednesday, Dec. 16, Open Snow founding meteorologist Joel Gratz said Colorado snowpack is about 25% below average. He said Colorado is about two weeks behind its average snowpack level for this time of year but that things could quickly turn around.
“If we get into a good pattern, and it snows every other day or so, we can quickly make up the deficit that we currently have,” Gratz said during the webinar. ....

Colorado River District webinar to discuss snow forecast and economic implications


The Colorado River District’s Water With Your Lunch webinar series is back for another round Wednesday, Dec. 16, to discuss snow and the impacts of snowfall or lack thereof on the Western Slope economy.
Joel Gratz, founding meteorologist of Open Snow, will present on how he makes forecasts and the possible impacts of La Niña this year.
Paul Miller, a service coordination hydrologist at the National Weather Service’s Colorado Basin River Forecast Center, will present on water supply forecasts. Todd Hagenbuch, a Colorado State Extension agent in Routt County and Alan Henceroth, chief operating officer of Arapahoe Basin Ski Area, will discuss the economic value of snow in agriculture and recreation. ....
