Joanna Lumley calls for urgent laws to combat single-use plastics


Joanna Lumley yesterday called for laws to combat single-use plastics amid fears the pandemic has made the waste crisis worse.
The actress said she never throws her PPE masks away and that she uses a bar of soap instead of hand sanitiser to cut litter.
She added that ‘doing something good every day, like not throwing plastic away, not buying plastic in the first place’ can make a change.
Miss Lumley, 74, is backing a Brita campaign to highlight how small changes can make a big environmental impact
Lumley, said: ‘The normal ways of doing things are the hardest things to shift, it’s not like people want to go on behaving in a way that is now being criticised, it’s just that it’s the normal way of doing it. ....

The sheer size of the Airbus A380 has rendered it one of the most visually-striking airliners of its generation. The most visually-striking livery seen on one in recent years is surely that of charter airline Hi Fly Malta. Its famous ‘Save The Coral Reefs’ paint scheme was seen on the superjumbo for two years. However, following its withdrawal, this aircraft no longer bears these colors.

Fear over plastic in seafood grows as tests show we could be eating thousands of fragments a year

Based on the seafood consumption of the average person in the UK, the analysis concludes we could be eating up to 12,915 pieces of plastic in molluscs such as mussels, clams, cockles and oysters each year.
We could also be consuming up to 30,788 microplastics in crustaceans such as crabs and shrimp, and up to 24,563 from fish. 
That adds up to a maximum of 68,266 pieces of plastic per person per year, on top of the plastic known to be consumed from foods such as sugar and salt, and from bottled water.
Mussels were found to contain an average of around 0.7 tiny pieces of plastic per gram (stock) ....
