Olympic overview: BYU track and cross country teams take home national championships
The BYU track and cross country teams had a heyday at NCAA nationals, taking first place as a team in the women’s distance medley relay and women’s cross country, as well as individually in men’s cross country.
Cross Country
The BYU women’s cross country team won the NCAA National Championship on March 15, the Cougars’ fifth team national title in program history. The team competed at the OSU Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma, finishing with 96 overall points.
BYU had seven runners competing, five of which finished in the top 40. Senior Anna Camp-Bennet led the way for the Cougars, finishing the 6K course in just 20:28.3, 11th place overall. Junior Aubrey Frentheway and senior Whittni Orton were not far behind her, finishing 15th and 17th respectively.
Olympic overview: Gymnastics beats in-state rival, track and swim have first-place finishes
Several of the Olympic sports were in action over the weekend for BYU and multiple teams and individuals took first place in their competitions.
Gymnastics
The No. 12 BYU gymnastics team edged out a win over No. 21 Utah State, 196.425-195.175 on Jan. 29. The 196.425 score is the highest score of the season for the Cougars.
On bars, seniors Haley Pitou and Abby Boden-Stainton tied for the best score overall with a 9.85.
Seniors Abbey Miner-Alder and Avery Bennett led the Cougars in the vault, both posting a score of 9.85. Bennett’s score is her best this season.
No. 11 Arizona State (0-1)
In the season opener at No. 2 Oklahoma, the Gym Devils scored a 194.725 to drop the dual meet.
Four freshmen made their collegiate debuts in this meet: Sarah Clark, Jada Mangahas, Anaya Smith and Emily White. Only two upperclassmen competed on Sunday: senior Cairo Leonard-Baker and junior Megan Thompson.
Leonard-Baker had a solid start to her final season, scoring a 9.825 on bars and vault and a 9.800 on floor.
Sophomore Juliette Boyer s consistency continues to shine as led the Gym Devils in the all-around at Oklahoma with a 39.125.
The Sun Devils and Cougars last competed against each other in 2019, beating them in both meets. ASU holds a 10-1 all-time record against BYU.
