How to run a feminist company

Chastened by the realities laid bare by the pandemic, a lot of companies are embracing fresh-start affirmations and promising newly enlightened, gentler, more equitable workplaces.
Let’s imagine we can take these pledges at face value. Perhaps leaders are finally tired of the dominant workplace model, what sociologists call “masculinity contest culture,” which rewards extreme confidence, the stamina to work long hours, dog-eat-dog competition, and the prioritization of work above all else, including family and friends. Or perhaps that they at least see that this type of culture is tiring other people out, even driving them to quit at record numbers. ....

Google removed its head of diversity for antisemitic views — Quartz at Work

June 3, 2021
Anyone can harbor prejudice even people with jobs focused on championing diversity.
That’s one lesson from the news that Google has reassigned its head of diversity, Kamau Bobb, over a 2007 blog post in which Bobb wrote, “If I were a Jew I would be concerned about my insatiable appetite for war and killing in defense of myself,” among other antisemitic comments. The post, written in response to Israel’s actions at the time including bombing Lebanon and cutting off Gaza residents’ access to utilities, was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon. The blog post has since been deleted from Bobb’s personal site, but a recovered version can be read here. ....

The Asian American immigrants behind key technology innovations — Quartz

May 29, 2021
Why does one of the world’s largest and most successful telecommunications companies have the word “railroad” in its name?
Every semester, I stump the Stanford students in my History of Information class with this query. The company in question is Sprint, which stands for “Southern Pacific Railroad Internal Networking.”
What follows is a brisk lecture on the history of American communications infrastructure that always leaves a few minds blown.
Railroads, I explain, were in many ways the first layer in the history of modern American and global information architecture. With the rise of electric telegraphy, engineers by and large chose to run their cables down the already cleared pathways of railroad lines like the Southern Pacific. Why fell more trees or traverse rivers anew when the work had already been done? Not long after came fiber optics, which followed a similar pattern, laying new infrastructure largely along the train routes that fir ....

Charlie Bit Me won't be leaving YouTube after all

The viral YouTube video
Charlie Bit Mesold on May 23 as a non-fungible token (NFT) for about $761,000, with the creators offering to remove the original clip from the video platform forever.
But the internet needs not fear.
Charlie Bit Me will remain on YouTube, says Howard Davies-Carr, the father of the now-famous children featured in the video. The video has racked up 884 million views since it was first uploaded in 2007.
“After the auction we connected with the buyer, who ended up deciding to keep the video on YouTube,” Davies-Carr told Quartz. “The buyer felt that the video is an important part of popular culture and shouldn’t be taken down. It will now live on YouTube for the masses to continue enjoying as well as memorialized as an NFT on the blockchain.”  ....
