Guardian of Tamil oral tradition falls silent

Guardian of Tamil oral tradition falls silent

“I know only about my land and my people. The only purpose behind my writing is to penpicture them to the Tamil world. I take all efforts to do it meticulously with no exaggeration. That is because I love my land and my people more than myself. They are the heroes of my works,” Ki Rajanarayanan had told me when I interviewed him for the final issue of the ‘Gentleman’ magazine in January 1995.
It is the Karisal (black soil) region he has celebrated in his works. What Wessex was to Thomas Hardy, the Karisal was to Ki Ra. At the southernmost corner of India lies Idai Seval in Tuticorin district, an obscure hamlet comprising just 250 houses. Since the land around is arid and infertile the inhabitants, most of them descendants of Telugu and Kannadiga immigrants, tend to cattle and grow cotton, ragi, and maize for a living. Branded “black desert”, the district is said to reg ....

Nostalgia road: War time tales of Mari Ners

This happens to be the centenary year of a marine engineer. Not a celebrity, but remembered as a WWII survivor. Amirapu Ramarao, just passed out of T S Dufferin, had hardly put to sea when, while in Calcutta harbour, he was asked to replace a drunk junior engineer on board SS Malda, a merchant ship on His Majesty’s duty during the war. He was pulled out of his first ship Hatrana, then in KG Dock, and escorted by a police sergeant to Garden Reach Docks, where the ship was waiting. As he boarded Malda, it set sail, heading a convoy under Captain H M Edmondson. ....

Chandra, a fighter forever

Chandra, a fighter forever
“Life is like a table tennis game. It’s about finding the right balance between deft touches and powerful smashes,” former national champion Venugopal Chandrasekhar once told TOI during a conversation. It summed up his life a fighter on and off court battling till the last point. On Wednesday though, the 63-year-old’s willpower was not enough to fight off Covid the ace player and coach fell to the pandemic that has wreaked havoc. Chandra is survived by his wife Mala and son Sanjay.
Cricket was Chandra’s first love but a head injury while fielding at the slips made him take up table tennis. At 12, Chandra enrolled in the now-defunct Emesor Sports Club in Adyar and his rise in the sport was swift. In 1970, Chandra became the Tamil Nadu subjunior champion. Three years later, he not only became the state junior champion but also made the quarters of the Nationals. ....

A fight between creative rights and legal protocols

A fight between creative rights and legal protocols
April 23, 2021, 2:29 PM IST
The ongoing war of words between director Shankar and producer V Ravichandran over the remake rights of Tamil film ‘Anniyan’ raises yet again the issue of how unprepared tinsel town is when it comes to written agreements, legal documents and other intellectual property matters involved in the making of a movie.
The original Vikram-starrer ‘Anniyan’ released in 2005. At present, the parties involved are bickering over an issue which may finally go to court, where they would be asked to produce an agreement showing which one of them has the rights to the script and its impending adaptation, and how the profit-sharing ratio should be arrived at. Since the writer of the film, Sujatha (alias Rangarajan) died in 2008, his family members may be able to throw some light, provided they are willing to participate in the ongoing tussle. Till then the industry stands divided o ....
