Debbie Zimmerman, CEO of the Grape Growers of Ontario, announce the organization’s 2021/22 Board of Directors, including the re-election of Chair Matthias Oppenlaender and Vice Chair Bill Schenck.
“As we approach another growing season and with the continuing challenges from managing the COVID-19 outbreak, our success as an organization depends on the dedication of the Board of Directors. Our focus for 2021 is to continue to support our 500 farm families, including 180 wineries, in the recovery from the COVID-19 global pandemic by ensuring 100% Ontario-grown wine is the focus of the government and consumers alike,” commented Matthias Oppenlaender.

Chair, vice chair re-elected to lead OFVGA - Greenhouse Canada


The Ontario Fruit and Vegetable Growers’ Association (OFVGA) has re-elected familiar faces to lead the organization.
Grape grower Bill George Jr. has been elected to a third one-year term as Chair of the OFVGA, along with apple grower Charles Stevens who was re-elected as Vice Chair.
Both George and Stevens first assumed their respective roles in 2019 and were re-elected at the OFVGA annual general meeting held virtually on February 16.

“COVID-19 has made the last year one for the history books; I’m honoured to serve my fellow growers for another year as chair of their organization and bring their issues and concerns to the attention of policymakers at all levels of government,” says George. “I’m proud of the relationships we’ve built across our industry and with government to help us get through the pandemic so far, and I look forward to continuing that work as we look ahead to this coming growing season and post-pandemic recovery.” ....

With the Covid-19 crisis still limiting or preventing in-person gatherings, many wine conferences and educational programs have changed to virtual schedules for enology, viticultural, and wine marketing/business meetings. While online sessions are obviously not the same as seeing and talking with speakers and other attendees in person, there are some advantages to “attending” virtual programs. Conference organizers have the option to include presenters based on their knowledge on topic under discussion, not how much it would cost to bring them to a specific location. And there certainly are a wide variety of virtual programs that anyone in the wine industry can attend, often at no cost. ....
